Auguries of Innocence: First experiences with Letterpress

From 2014 to 2018, the Cambridge School of Art hosted a unique project, bringing William Blake’s "Auguries of Innocence" to life through student-created letterpress prints.

Under the expert guidance of Nicholas Jeeves and letterpress instructor Elizabeth Fraser, each year a selection of student works was chosen to visually interpret Blake’s verses until the entire poem was represented. Elizabeth taught us the meticulous craft of letterpress printing, while Nicholas led the module that made this project possible.

As one of the designers selected to contribute, I’m proud to share this work that stands as a celebration of student creativity and classic literature.

My printed submission covers the following verses:

“Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.”

The collective efforts have been compiled into a book that showcases student designs and pays homage to Blake’s poetic vision. The book has been submitted to the British National Library.

MY ROLE: Graphic Designer.
